Director of Gunma Prefecture Aikido Federation, Japan

Shihan Toshiyuki Arai

Shihan Toshiyuki Arai, born on May 11, 1936, in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the most respected figures in the Aikido world. At the age of 21, in 1957, he encountered Morihei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido, and began his lifelong journey in the art. Being directly taught by O-Sensei provided him with not only technical mastery but also an authentic connection to the founder’s spirit and philosophy.

Shihan Arai pursued higher education in the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts at Japan National University, graduating in 1962. His background in the arts enriched his perspective on Aikido, seeing it not only as a martial discipline but also as a form of expression and creativity. Over the decades, Arai has become a living bridge between O-Sensei’s original teachings and the modern practice of Aikido.

As the Director of the Gunma Prefecture Aikido Federation, he has been responsible for spreading Aikido both in Japan and internationally. His seminars emphasize the balance of physical technique, spiritual development, and the cultivation of a peaceful mindset. He is highly regarded as one of the few remaining disciples who trained directly under Morihei Ueshiba and has dedicated his life to ensuring the authenticity and growth of Aikido worldwide.
