What is AIKIDO?

Aikido is a contemporary martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba. Following his passing, leadership was passed on to his son, Kisshomaru Ueshiba, who became the second Doshu. Today, this responsibility is carried by Moriteru Ueshiba, continuing the family’s legacy as the current Aikido Doshu. The Aikikai Foundation was created to preserve the teachings of the Founder, encourage physical and mental growth through Aikido, and spread the art worldwide. At present, Aikido is practiced in over 140 countries. The central dojo, known as Aikido Hombu Dojo, was established in 1931. Under the guidance of the Doshu, numerous Shihan and Shidoin work together with dedication to advance, refine, and promote the practice of Aikido at its very heart.
